How a kill switch lanyard works
A safety lanyard prevents your boat from continuing under power without a helmsman if you fall overboard. The lanyard is connected to the kill switch. If you fall from the boat, the pull on the lanyard automatically stops the engine. This stops the powered movement of the boat and gives you a chance to climb back on board. A kill switch and lanyard can be fitted to both inboard and outboard engines.
Is a kill switch lanyard mandatory?
In the Netherlands, a kill switch or safety lanyard is required on boats and personal watercraft capable of exceeding 20 km/h. The person steering wears the lanyard around their wrist. For boats that cannot exceed 20 km/h but are regularly operated by a child, we also recommend fitting a kill switch and lanyard.
