Outboard maintenance and winterisation

Regular maintenance helps you get the best from your outboard. Moving parts need lubrication from time to time. We sell high-quality oils and lubricants developed for outboard motors. Consult your engine’s manual and lubricate the important points. Lubricate cables, throttle controls and shift linkages once a year, or twice a year with frequent use. This page covers recurring tasks for routine maintenance and winterisation.

Cleaning the carburettor

Fuel-system maintenance matters. When disconnecting your outboard for winter storage, draining fuel from the carburettor, tank and lines helps prevent deposits. As volatile components in unused fuel evaporate, oily residue can remain and block the carburettor, causing poor idling and uneven running. Cleaning your outboard’s carburettor is therefore important.

Also check that the fuel filter is clean. Most fuel filters are transparent, making a visual check straightforward. When replacing it, choose the correct type. Fogging oil helps prevent corrosion inside the engine, including on cylinder walls.
