Outboard water pump impellers
Choose your equipment for life on the water.
The outboard impeller is located in the lower unit. It is advisable to inspect it annually and replace it every other year. Before ordering a replacement, check the old impeller’s dimensions to ensure you choose the right one.
An outboard uses the water it runs in for cooling. Cooling lets the engine deliver the required performance without overheating. Unlike a propeller, which moves water to propel the boat, an impeller draws water into the cooling system. Its vanes carry water through the engine’s cooling system. An impeller normally lasts a long time, but may need replacing if its vanes become damaged. This can reduce cooling-water flow and cause overheating and further engine damage. Impeller damage is often not immediately noticeable while boating, so inspect it regularly, for example when preparing the boat for winter. This lets you determine whether replacement is necessary.
