Tailpiece oil

As the name suggests, the tail oil is located in the tail of the outboard motor. This oil ensures that the gears for the shifting mechanism and propeller drive remain well lubricated.

The stern oil must be replaced annually. This is also a check to ensure that no water has entered the oil. Although it is a closed system, the stern is in the water while sailing. Water in the oil reduces its lubricating effect and can cause damage to the gears. Even if you do not sail very often, moisture can still enter the tailpiece. That is why it is important to replace it even then.
