Security & Locks

Unfortunately, boats are often stolen. You can prevent this by using locks for your boat. Not only to protect the boat itself against theft, but also to prevent the outboard motor from being stolen. There are different types of locks in all price ranges.

The outboard motor lock is designed to secure the outboard motor against theft. These locks fit almost any outboard motor.

Want to be sure that your valuable outboard motor won't be stolen? An outboard motor lock secures your outboard motor against theft. There are many different types of locks varying in price. This price mainly depends on whether an outboard motor lock is SCM approved or not. An SCM quality mark is mandatory for many insurers when taking out insurance for your boat and outboard motor.

Approved boat locks

It is important to know that almost every insurer requires your outboard motor lock to be SCM approved. SCM is the certification institute in the Netherlands in the field of vehicle security and therefore also for your outboard motor and lock for your outboard motor.

If you have insured your outboard motor and boat, it is wise to choose an SCM-approved outboard motor lock, as this is the only way you can claim on your insurance in the event of theft.

What is the SCM quality mark: explanation + tips

The SCM quality mark provides theft prevention because the locks must meet certain SCM requirements in order to guarantee the best security. The quality mark is issued for locks that meet strict requirements with regard to theft prevention. The SCM quality mark generally applies to built-in alarm systems and outboard motor locks. Companies that install such locks can make use of SCM certification.

What is SCM?

The abbreviation SCM stands for Stichting Certificering Motorrijtuigbeveiliging (Motor Vehicle Security Certification Foundation), which is an institute authorised to issue SCM certificates. Various types of locks can be awarded the SCM quality mark once they have met the SCM requirements. There are various suppliers who are authorised to market approved locks with certificates. These include suppliers of outboard motor locks, as well as cable locks and chain locks.

SCM is an executive body (full name: KIWA SCM). The rules that the SCM quality mark must comply with are drawn up by CCV. SCM then tests the locks based on the rules drawn up by CCV. As of April 2020, CCV is the new “scheme manager” of SCM. The official name for an SCM-approved lock is therefore “approved by KIWA SCM, in accordance with the CCV Vehicle Security Quality Mark”. Before CCV became the scheme administrator, VbV held this position. As a result, VbV is still often mentioned in insurance policies. Roughly speaking, a transition period of one year is expected. After one year, insurance policies should be adapted to CCV. The procedure for applying and using the CCV quality mark can be viewed here.

SCM requirements

There are, of course, a number of requirements that must be met before the quality mark is awarded for a particular lock. The quality mark has different categories, such as the standard class and the heavy class. For the standard class, the products must be effective in preventing theft by so-called opportunistic thieves.

For the standard class, one of the SCM requirements is that the lock must be able to withstand tools that can easily remove the opportunistic bicycle for a minimum of three minutes. For the heavy class, a longer period of minutes applies for theft prevention in relation to professional thieves.

  • Standard class, opportunistic thief, 3 minutes of resistance
  • Heavy class, professional thief, 5 minutes of resistance

In this respect, a comparison can also be made with the ART quality mark, whereby the standard class can be compared with ART 1 and 2 and the heavy class with ART 3 to ART 5.

Tips SCM quality mark

If you are taking out theft insurance for a boat, for example, the insurer may impose further requirements on the type of lock. For example, the requirement that the outboard motor lock must meet the SCM requirements and have an SCM quality mark. It is always wise to obtain information about this in advance.
